China Asset Management (Hong Kong), Visa, Australia and New Zealand Banking Group and Fidelity International jointly released the interim report of the second phase of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) Digital Hong Kong Dollar + (e-HKD+) pilot program, entitled "Transforming Global Payments: The Role of Tokenized Currency and Funds in Cross-Border Transactions". The report pointed out that the second phase explored use cases around three themes: settlement of tokenized assets, programmability, and offline payments. Sandbox participants will test how Australian investors can use digital Hong Kong dollars or tokenized deposits to purchase tokenized fund units from Hong Kong asset management companies. The whole process is divided into two steps: first, Australian investors obtain digital Hong Kong dollars through their ANZ banks; second, use digital Hong Kong dollars to purchase shares of China Asset Management (Hong Kong)'s tokenized Hong Kong money market fund. These transactions are designed to be near real-time and synchronous to test the effect of reducing counterparty risks associated with settlement. In the next phase of the sandbox, sandbox participants will launch end-to-end transaction tests to conduct in-depth research on how tokenization technology can reduce counterparty risks associated with settlement. The tests are expected to provide important insights for the industry to further develop interoperability standards, token standards, token distribution, and the 24/7 availability provided by blockchain technology.
