PANews reported on February 12 that Reuters quoted the New York Times on Wednesday as part of an exchange with Russia, saying that the United States will release Alexander Vinnik, a Russian leader suspected of cybercrime, in exchange for the release of American citizen Marc Fogel.
Vinnik, who previously operated BTC-e, one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges, was arrested in 2017 and detained at Washington’s request on suspicion of laundering $4 billion through the platform. In May, he pleaded guilty to money laundering conspiracy charges and faces 20 years in prison.
