US diplomats warned against using classified information to place bets on prediction websites.

PANews reported on May 7th that, according to a US State Department internal memo seen by The Wall Street Journal, US diplomats have been warned against using classified information to place bets on prediction websites. With betting funds pouring into the US-Iran negotiations, the memo reminded all employees that abusing non-public information for financial gain is a serious violation and will not be tolerated. This warning comes a week after a US special forces soldier pleaded not guilty to charges of using classified information to bet over $400,000 on the impeachment of the former Venezuelan president on Polymarket. Officials stated that the rapid rise of online prediction markets has become a significant potential national security issue for the United States. Last month, hours before Trump announced a ceasefire agreement with Iran, multiple accounts on Polymarket made precise and timely bets, winning tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars.
