OpenAI Announces Data Center Energy Cost Control Plan

PANews reported on January 21 that OpenAI announced its "Stargate Community plan" on Tuesday, aiming to achieve energy self-sufficiency and ensure that its operations do not increase electricity costs for local communities. The Stargate project is a multi-year, $500 billion initiative to build AI data centers for training and inference, and it has received support from major investors including Oracle. As energy access becomes a key constraint on the development of AI, many technology companies are directly investing in power infrastructure to support larger and more numerous data centers. OpenAI stated that each Stargate site will have a tailored community plan, "which will be guided by community input and local needs." "Specifically, this may include providing the project with entirely new dedicated power and storage facilities (fully funded by the project team), or it may involve increasing and paying for new energy generation and transmission resources."
