PANews reported on December 30th, citing Cointelegraph, that the Russian Ministry of Justice has proposed amendments to the criminal code, suggesting fines of up to 2.5 million rubles (approximately $19,000) or up to five years in prison for illegal cryptocurrency mining. Severe penalties will be imposed if high profits are involved or if the activity is carried out by organized groups. Official data shows that as of October 2024, only about 30% of miners nationwide had completed registration. This measure aims to strengthen tax oversight and crack down on underground mining activities.
Russia plans to impose criminal penalties on unregistered cryptocurrency miners, with a maximum sentence of five years in prison.
