Elon Musk has initiated talks about using blockchain technology at his new U.S. government efficiency department, according to people familiar with the matter, the latest sign that the Trump administration wants to boost the digital asset industry.
Musk, who has led a push to make government more efficient, has raised the idea of using digital ledgers to reduce government costs with close allies, said one of the people, who asked not to be identified because the discussions are private. The use of blockchain to track federal spending, protect data, make payments and even manage buildings has been discussed, the people said.
Officials from the Ministry of Government Efficiency have met with representatives from several public blockchains to evaluate their technologies, according to a person familiar with the conversations.

Representatives for the White House and the Department of Government Efficiency did not respond to requests for comment. Musk did not respond to an email seeking comment.
The Department of Government Efficiency, created by Trump's Jan. 20 executive order, is charged with modernizing federal technology and software to maximize government efficiency and productivity. Trump has said the team will work with the White House Office of Management and Budget to identify spending cuts that can be made and complete recommendations by July 4, 2026.
Musk recruited about 100 volunteers to write code for his project before Trump took office, a person familiar with the matter said.
