A ten-day ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel took effect, with Trump declaring that "Iran has agreed not to possess nuclear weapons and the US and Iran may resume talks this weekend."

PANews reported on April 17th that, according to Reuters, a ten-day ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon took effect on Thursday. Meanwhile, US President Trump stated that the next meeting between the US and Iran could take place this weekend, further strengthening optimism that the war with Iran is nearing its end. According to CCTV News, on the 16th local time, Trump stated that the US had obtained a "very substantial" statement ensuring that Iran would not possess nuclear weapons, and that this commitment would be valid for more than 20 years. However, Trump did not disclose the details of the so-called "statement." Trump also stated that Iran had agreed not to possess nuclear weapons, and that the prospects for reaching an agreement "look very optimistic." He said, "Iran has agreed to almost all of the demands." Currently, there has been no response from Iran.

Bloomberg reports that Trump claimed, without evidence, that Iran had agreed to terms it had long resisted, including abandoning its nuclear weapons ambitions and handing over nuclear materials. Trump added that the agreement also included “free oil” and the opening of the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran has not publicly confirmed that it has made these concessions. Trump’s expectations for a quick resolution run counter to some Gulf Arab and European leaders, who predict a US-Iran peace deal will take approximately six months. If the ceasefire in Lebanon paves the way for a broader peace agreement with Iran, it would be a significant victory for the Trump administration. Trump stated that he was unsure whether the two-week ceasefire agreement reached with Iran last week would need to be extended beyond next week, but he would do so if necessary, adding that Tehran wanted an agreement. Furthermore, according to the Wall Street Journal, Netanyahu stated that he had agreed to a 10-day ceasefire arrangement to advance peace negotiations with Lebanon.
