Illinois, USA, is considering imposing a 0.2% tax on cryptocurrency transactions.

PANews reported on June 6th, citing Cointelegraph, that the Illinois legislature has passed its fiscal year 2027 budget, which includes a provision proposing a 0.2% tax on cryptocurrency transactions, levied by digital asset brokers. This measure, dubbed the "privilege tax," is part of amendments to the Digital Asset Privilege Tax Act, which includes registration requirements for any digital asset broker operating in Illinois. Starting January 1st, brokers failing to comply could be charged with a third-degree felony in the state, facing two to five years in prison and a fine of up to $25,000. The budget passed the state legislature on Monday but still requires Governor JB Pritzker's signature to become law. Pritzker has repeatedly stated publicly that he plans to sign the bill as soon as possible, but as of Friday morning, he had not yet done so. Lawmakers expect the cryptocurrency tax to bring the state $60 million in revenue.
