Iran estimates that charging fees for the Strait of Hormuz could bring in $40 billion in annual revenue

PANews, June 25 – According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, informed officials revealed that Iran estimates charging for safety, security, and environmental services in the Strait of Hormuz would generate $40 billion annually for the countries involved. If the idea is implemented, it would give Tehran cash flow and control it did not possess before the war. These officials said the Iranian regime is drawing on models from around the world, including the Dardanelles Strait. At the Dardanelles, Turkey levies a tax called "gold francs" on ships traveling to and from the Aegean Sea, used to pay for passage through that international waterway. According to Iranian officials, to gain support, Tehran is pitching the idea to the broader Middle East and even to countries farther away. They said Iran hopes its Persian Gulf neighbors will also join the agreement and share in the revenues. During a visit to Oman on Tuesday to discuss the proposed arrangement with neighbors, Iranian Parliament Speaker Qalibaf said that everyone needs to understand that the way the Strait is managed will never go back to how it was before.
